Maybe this month's theme is "two-post follow-up callback mini-updates." Hey, I did it with Belbury Poly [see previous post].

In reading up on what I might be missing from Caribou's new one, Swim, I realized what I was missing was his 3rd album! In review after review, The Milk of Human Kindness (2005) was referred to as heavily kraut-influenced - and you know I love krautrock!!

Filled in a blank with The Owl's Map (2006), second CD from Belbury Poly (between #4, 2004 and #17, 2009). It's got the usual mix of Belbury radiophonic soundscapes, but "Scarlet Ceremony" is up to something hauntingly different.

Why Don't Caribou Swim?

I'm not so sure what to think.


"Odessa" from Swim (2010)

Dan Snaith (aka Caribou, fka Manitoba) moved to England, learned to swim, started going to clubs, and hanging around with dance producers and DJ's. This has influenced his new album, Swim (2010). Caribou's been one of my more favorite "electronica" artists (#4, 2007!), mainly because there was as much rock or pop or psychedelia in the music as anything dance-oriented. But from what I've read, this is an intentional effort to make explicit club music. Uh...

So, gone are the excessive drums and piled-up arrangements, and for the most part the pop melodies too. Rhythms tend to be more streamlined, the music more stark, and the vocals more central. Not an improvement really. Then again, the tunes I like more (as above) are actually clubbier than the more experimental ones (as "Bowls"). I should like a clanging, glitchy treatment where Tibetan singing bowls are misused, but it seems 6:22 of pointlessness as I'm listening.

Maybe that's part of the problem: the songs are just too long for what they are, one of my issues with Merriweather Post Pavilion (2009). I like individual parts of several songs, like the last quarter of "Sun" - but not enough. Like MPP, Swim is getting terrific buzz. Tops album-ish kind of buzz, I have yet to see a very negative review. Most all in the 4/5 - 80% range.

O well, people change, bands change... I'll keep giving it a chance in case something clicks. But I have a feeling it is what I'm hearing, and it's not my bag. The Animal Collective breakout parallels continue, and I wish Caribou that level of success! If I'm in town, I'll still go see them on the 15th. Why not?!

I've been listening to some free albums by Dead Mellotron, a Dallas psych-rock band. I couldn't remember what blog I'd read about them, but eventually figured out it was on Pitchfork's Forkcast blog, where they were pimpin' a new free preview track.

Sometimes like more trad shoegaze, sometimes more like the garage-junk psychedelia of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, sometimes something else. I think I prefer the earlier Ghost Light Constellation (2009), to this year's self-titled (2010). It's more diverse and spacier, I think... But you don't have to choose - they're both equally free and downloadable! [Links from their Myspace page...]

Time and Space v.1

Sorry for the hold-up! Among other things, my pre-orders have finally started arriving. So I've had a lot of new material to catch up on first, but we can begin again.

After several EP's and singles, now comes the first full-length release from The Time & Space Machine (#6, 2009): Set Phazer to Stun (2010). The Richard Norris half of the beloved Beyond the Wizards Sleeve (#1, 2008) creates fresh rather than going the remix route. The material's pretty similar, though: psychedelic organ 'n' effects freakbeat space-kraut-dance-rock. Don't come looking for insightful lyrics, for they are as repetitive as the locked-in grooves...



"Time and Space" from Set Phazer to Stun (2010)

They're really catching on, if YouTube clippage tells the story! So, the listener is eased in with I guess a pseudo-themesong (although Volume Two had "Time & Space Taxi"). I wouldn't go so far as to call the album "leisurely," but each tune slips into a groove and appears in no rush to vacate. Some songs get slightly more noisy or a bit more beaty. It sometimes comes off almost as a mixtape, but then again sort of hangs together well as a set.

Title track is all organ pulse and flourish, driving beat, and oscillator-phaser verses. Until the little details start intruding - the guitar break, the noise washes, and so forth... I'm sure there are lots of bits left to unearth. The Machine uses a deep soundfield throughout, scattering studio trickery around.



"You Are The One" from Set Phazer to Stun (2010)

Hypnotic mantra, synthy hook, trap drumset freakbeat. This was released late last year as a single/EP, and I've grown to like it more and much more since my original impression. Followed on the album by the awesome 7" from last year "Children of the Sun / Zeitghost" - which alone is worth the price of the cd!


Let's see. "Infinite" has lots of guitar, forwards and backwards, plus sitars. It also instrumentals the groovy. "More Cowbell" is pretty rhythmic-oriented with a fuzz guitar and cowbell break/hook (obviously and admittedly inspired by the Walken SNL skit). And "Midsummer Night" is like a lost '60s Cali raga folk-rock classic, in the vein of, uh...

Heeyyy, that's also kinda psychedelic and '60s too! But rather than the West Coast acoustic music, it's more on the UK symphonic pop - flutes 'n' mellotrons and such. O well, I can dig it! (This and Cowbell were on the "You Are The One" EP.)

Maybe the swirling diva horn-chart cover mash-up of "After the Gold Rush" was too obvious for anyone else to post? You do kind of have to hear it for yourself - it has a sax solo and manages to successfully incorporate "For What It's Worth!" The epilogue mixes spacey drift and a Spaghetti Western vibe, and is named "Trip Sideways." So there!

At the moment, Rough Trade (UK) still has limited 2xCD editions - with a bonus mix cd (more in v.2), and apparently an upcoming 2xLP vinyl edition! (Just discovered that... ltd ed of 600!)
