I've generally liked the modern psych rock coming out of South America, and this sounds to me good & hippie. Here's another official video: "Despreocupar."

Guadalajara, Mex. Just like Has A Shadow, but different music. Here's another official (?) video: "What's Holding You?" Little more rockin' one there... and their Bandcamp.

That's from a free download comp of Greek folk covers. I've seen this guy's name around some, and would have associated it with free-/freak-folk - so far, so good! Bandcamp's are mostly from various labels: Paradise of Bachelors, Three Lobed Recordings, and 3-Lobed again.

Unknown Psych Festives Explored
Well, we've taken a couple of looks at announced line-up for the 2014 Austin Psych Fest: first the top-billed, and then more of the known quantities. So now, I'm going to try to explore some of the complete unknowns - probably not covering every band named for the fest.
"No. 1 Against The Rush" by Liars, from WIXIW (2012)
"Brooklyn dance-punk"... yeah. Supposedly, that doesn't say it all, but everything I heard was pretty in line with exactly that.
"From the Sun" by Unknown Mortal Orchestra, from II (2013)
What is this? I just... Okay, "So Good at Being in Trouble" is a bit closer, but these seem a bit odd choices for Psych Fest.
"Lamborghini Meltdown" by Tobacco (ft. Zackey Force Funk), from LA UTI (2010)
Hey, I know a little bit. The guy in Tobacco is also from Black Moth Super Rainbow, and has worked with Beck. Although I probably have more sympathy for this experimental maximalism electro-funk, these 'unknowns' are ranging pretty far afield from trad 'psychedelic' music.
"Nous Etions Deux" by La Femme, from Psycho Tropical Berlin (2013)
That's French tropicália coldwave, non?
"Rat House" by Shannon & The Clams, from Dreams in the Rat House (2013)
Garagey weirdos, with an electric jug? Bones Brigade as directed by John Waters? Okay, making more sense...
"Awa Adounia" by Terakaft, from Kel Tamasheq (2012)
Not what I was expecting from the band name. I'm down with this kinda stuff, although I do realize you could make an equally valid argument against its Psychfestivity as I would against, say, Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
"One" by Yamantaka//Sonic Titan, from Uzu (2013)
I'm a little confused. What does it mean to "pay tribute to the extended group's indigenous upbringing?" I'll check out some more of the music before delving into the upbringing of the extended group.
"Sonic Pearl" by Destruction Unit, from Two Strong Hits 7" (2013)
Stonery grungeness, or post-punk gothic?
"Shine Your Light" by Gap Dream, from Shine Your Light (2013)
Sparkly. Now that's exactly what I thought it would sound like, based only on the band name. What do I win?!
Looks like I might have the makings of 2nd 'unknowns' post. This one left me a little... unsatisfied. (Not that I've totally passed judgment anywhere just yet.)

Austin Psych Favorites
Gonna be a lot like the previous APF post yesterday - but this time, it's personal! Some of the involved bands that I'm already super-geared up for...
Once again with a minimum of yakkin'.
"Sonic Prayer Jam" by Earthless, live at Winter's Womb III,
The Casbah, San Diego, CA (01/21/2012)
YES!!! Never seen Earthless before - #3 of 2008, shoulda-been's of 2007, and #3 of 2005. Psyched!
Wait, I mentioned these drone magicians at the end of the last time, right? O well, we're talking #8 of 2011 and #11 of 2010, and greatness beyond.
"Dream Odyssey" by Mono, from For My Parents (2012)
Occasionally mellow, until they aren't. Mono (#4, 2009 and #5,2006 among others) have been very good to see live (#7 Live, 2009 and #10 Live, 2010).
"Mazes" by Moon Duo, from Mazes (2011)
From year before last, Moon Duo (#11, 2013) were awesome fun (at A.P.F. and #7 Live, 2012).
"To Clean" by Woods, from Songs of Shame (2009)
Woods has been on a 3-album Top 10 tear, and mighta gotten the previous in there somehow: #9 of 2012, #7 of 2011, and #6 of 2010. They were a highlight for me at APF5 (#1 Live, 2012)... and I often forget I discovered them as a terrific opener (#4 Live, 2009).
"H-p1" by White Hills, from H-p1 (2011)
Got to meet some of White Hills (co-#5, 2010) at my first Psych Fest (#4 Live, 2011), which was cool. I'm glad to hear we'll get another shot. They do so much so good - check out their bassist-director's official video channel: Ego Sensation.
"Blue Velvet Blues" by Acid Mothers Temple, from Pataphisical Freak Out MU! (1999)
I keep missing AMT! Must not miss AMT again.
"Ready to Fly" by Aqua Nebula Oscillator, from Aqua Nebula Oscillator (2002)
I've only heard Aqua Nebula Oscillator's 2002 self-titled album. Guess which year is next for a historical 21st-century Top 10 list??
"Entrance Song" [***NSFW video***] by The Black Angels, from Phosphene Dream (2010)
Oops, almost forgot the main hosts! The Black Angels, since #3 of 2006, and... let's say: co-#6 Live Show, 2010.
Might be the last of these for awhile. But if I do another one soon, it will be more exploratory of currently unknown players.

Black Mountain Psych
Yeah, I don't shoot video at shows because I'm too busy watching the band. But I do appreciate those people who do! And one of those people has come through big time.
Goat's set was definitely the highlight of my Austin Psych Fest, being that they were my #1 of 2012 & I'd never seen them before. But Black Mountain (#6 Live, 2010) was a real close second, and someone shot most of their set!
O yeah, and Roky was real good too. And Boris. And...

Super-prog, that at times comes on like bombastic Mollusk-style Ween. (That is good.) The next video has the coda, along with a full "Buried by the Blues." Nice.

The rain started falling during "Phosphorescent Waves," so the camera went into hiding [full studio]. I wasn't altogether with it, but I'm thinking there was another Wilderness Heart (#17, 2010) rocker played in there - maybe the title track. But not "Let Spirits Ride," which I initially mistook it for.

No "Druganaut" from that one, but I'm fairly sure they did perform "Queens Will Play" somewhere in there towards the end.

Live Goat
This was originally going to be just an overall Psych Fest update - but some people aren't posting up all their live videos yet. I know you were filming!!
Anyway, given all the stuff happening around Goat (#1, 2012), I think it warrants yet another post about them.
"Run to Your Mama" from World Music (2012)
New-ish official video (and there's even something unofficial). Maybe you missed the RSD Remixes of that song? No sweat - MP3's are available at Amazon & at Boomkat. Hell, looks like they've still got some of the 12"s over at Forced Exposure.
Obviously, Goat's been touring America recently (getting to Psych Fest...), so check some of this out:

Or check out the encore from Psych Fest, either way. Lotsa fun was had by all. Someone else shot during "Let It Bleed." The only thing I'd suggest was maybe some brighter lights for more stage action visibility, but that's a minor thing. They (both Goat and the crowd) tore it up!
Also, you might not know a couple of tunes on the setlist - I sure didn't. But "Dreambuilding" and "Stone Goat" are the double-A sides of their new/upcoming single. Stream the first (???) A-side from Pitchfork. Out already in Sweden on 12", another 2 versions are out in early June. American pre-order via Sub-Pop, and Euro pre-order via Rough Trade (on Rocket Recordings, both are 7").

Austin Psych Facebook Series 2013
Sorry if you haven't been following on Facebook, but here's a round-up of Austin Psych Fest videos & news, leading up to this weekend's big happenings!
The full line-up schedule was finally posted on April 10th.
There have not been four (4!) mixtapes posted at the fest site. Of course, the traditional Al Lover official mix - stream or download from SoundCloud. Then came the surprise 2-hour mix from Anton Newcombe (of the Brian Jonestown Massacre) - stream over at SoundCloud, download from here. Not much more than a week later, Sonic Boom (of Spectrum) dropped his own official APF mix-up, stream it via SoundCloud again. And that's not even counting the one (ones?) that I missed - the streaming Deli Radio mix??
And there were a couple of Psych Festers with some awesome news. Goat (#1, 2012) has an upcoming single that you can stream at Pitchfork. The Cult of Dom Keller (#15, 2011) are doing their first vinyl full-length LP - check it out!

13. "Burning Mirrors" - Lumerians
Lumerians are veterans of an earlier Psych Fest event, and also appeared on blog-comp-series Vol. 6. This MP3 track comes from Prefix Mag.

I thought I'd put the Holydruggers on a comp before, but looks like it was just a Chilean-themed Facebook collection post. MP3 from the band Soundcloud - could have also gone with one of the free versions of "Ancient Land" available from their Bandcamp.

Hey, full circular. I discovered Woodsman while prepping for Austin Psych Fest 2011 (#4 Live, 2011), and then they ended up as my #2 Albums of 2011. And due to their free-music generosity, they wound up on blog-comp-series Vol. 5, Vol. 6, Vol. 7, Vol. 8, and Vol. 9. And now, thanks to Stereogum, Volume 10.
21. "Dia 36" (Os Mutantes cover) - The Trip
Since Os Mutantes (#15, 1969) pre-date free MP3 downloads, I found this Brazilian group/duo covering their fellow Brasileiros from their Soundcloud.
22. "Aldhechen Manin" - Tinariwen
Last year's Psych Fest (#1 Live, 2012) featured Bombino, a quite-jammin' Tuareg band. Well, Tinariwen were the originators! MP3 downloaded from band's Soundcloud.
23. "Cremation Ghat II" - OM
Let's see... Om were the rhythm section of the legendary Sleep, and stuck it out when that band split. Later the drummer bailed, and was replaced by Emil Amos (of Grails, Holy Sons). I believe they're still just a duo now. Another from Stereogum MP3.
24. "Anthem" [edit] - Silver Apples with Jimi
From their collaboration back in the late-'60s! I wonder if The Simeon enjoys watching Super Troopers (2001)...

Indian Cult Moon Jewelry Psych
Here's some Austin Psych Fest alumni & related updates...
From what I've read on e-mail notices and the APF website, the band announcements for next year will begin in November, and tickets will go on sale "in early December 2012." "I Can See" - live at Rudyard's, Houston, TX - 10/12/2012 Awhile back, we went and caught Moon Duo here at the friendly neighborhood pub. Unfortunately, we happened to miss local openers Hamamatsu Tom. So far, I'm digging the newest Moon Duo album Circles (2012). There's an official video for "Sleepwalker". "Secret sound 5" from Secret Sounds (2012) I mentioned the latest Cult of Dom Keller release right here. So they've made that new video for track #5. Aha, I just noticed that they'd recently put up one for for "secret sound no.6." So peep that one next! "Eva Cherie" from PEEL IT (2012) Houston's own Psych Fest regulars Indian Jewelry have a new one coming out on Reverberation Appreciation Society, the in-house label from the Austin Psych Fest people. Here's where I heard the news. O yeah, and they're even offering that preview track as a free download!
Finally, the RAS/APF label is collaborating on a forthcoming European 2xLP comp, limited edition of 1,000 for the world.

Cowboy Songs & Campfire Ballads
At Austin Psych Fest, I bought a ltd-ed Spindrift CDr called Songs Born of The West: Cowboy Songs & Campfire Ballads (2012). One of 100 copies.
It's mostly covers of (very) old-school western songs, along with a couple of apparent originals. Here are some of the original versions, because none of the Spindrift material is on the web (yet)...
"Cool Water" by Vaughn Monroe & The Sons of The Pioneers (1948)
Spindrift credits someone different than YouTube - the songwriter, Bob Dolan.
"Wanderers of the Wasteland" by Gene Autrey (1937)
Probably my grandma's favorite singers there - Spindrift recognizes Johnny Bond on this one (not the songwriter).
"The Ballad of Paladin" by Johnny Western (1957)
Even I know this one, from the tv show "Have Gun - Will Travel." What I didn't know was that Gene Roddenberry wrote for the show.
"They're Hanging Me Tonight" by Marty Robbins (1959)
From the same album as both "Big Iron" and "El Paso" - plus a cover of Bob Dolan's "Cool Water" too!
"Navajo Trail" by Frankie Laine (1961)
Frankie Laine did a few of these tunes, plus the theme to "Rawhide" - Wikipedia info.

Johnny Western has a great name for this kinda material, don't you think? Don Walser also played this tune!
"The Wayward Wind" by Tex Ritter (1956)
John Ritter's dad no less! Anyway, the Spindrift versions are pretty respectful, with a minimum of hip modernity. Different, at least...

Sensory Overload
Between recuperating from Austin Psych Fest and then catching a cold, I'm late returning.
Between Record Store Day, big sales at AllThatIsHeavy and Boomkat, Austin Psych Fest shopping, the Ad Hoc comp from Kickstarter, and random purchases, I think I'm set for awhile...
But what to start with?!
"Adounia" by Bombino, live at Austin Psych Fest 2012
Psych Fest was really, really excellent. The best was seeing some band I expected to be good, and having them blow out those expectations by a lot. Bombino was king of that. The floor was only about half-full when they took the stage, but Emo's had filled up by the end of their set. People were just blown away! I would also add Moon Duo, Quest for Fire, Entrance Band, Woods, Meat Puppets and The Brian Jonestown Massacre to that list - all exceeded fairly high expectations.

Federale was probably the best out-of-nowhere surprise of the festival. They were true Spaghetti Western players (even more than Spindrift), with the whistling, trumpet, percussion tricks, and the whole vibe. Really good sounding, with a ton of people on the (small) stage - including guest stars.

Then there were the surprise covers. Meat Puppets were one of only a couple of bands to take it into full space-out territory, out of which they shocked me with a Beach Boys cover. Apparently, it's something they do, but I hadn't been keeping up with recent Puppets bootlegs, I guess. Entrance Band also got all abstract some, and then covered Love's "A House Is Not A Motel." In addition to their award-winning (at least on this blog) psych-folk indie-pop, Woods also went deep-space like 3 times, which was certainly beyond the call of duty.

That video was shot from right in front of me, and that's how the whole fest ended. BJTM played an epic show, including several extended rants from Anton. Afterwards, while trying to find a taxi, I saw the "Spokesman for the Revolution" heading towards me on the Riverside sidewalk. I told him good show, then turned to see Anton being shoved into the cab we just missed, surrounded by various shouts from adoring fans. It was nice getting to at least say hi to lots of the musicians - including the drummer for Bombino, Stephen McBean, Paz from Entrance, a couple of dudes from Quest for Fire, the 12-string player from Brian Jonestown, etc...

Between Record Store Day, big sales at AllThatIsHeavy and Boomkat, Austin Psych Fest shopping, the Ad Hoc comp from Kickstarter, and random purchases, I think I'm set for awhile...
But what to start with?!
"Adounia" by Bombino, live at Austin Psych Fest 2012
Psych Fest was really, really excellent. The best was seeing some band I expected to be good, and having them blow out those expectations by a lot. Bombino was king of that. The floor was only about half-full when they took the stage, but Emo's had filled up by the end of their set. People were just blown away! I would also add Moon Duo, Quest for Fire, Entrance Band, Woods, Meat Puppets and The Brian Jonestown Massacre to that list - all exceeded fairly high expectations.

Federale was probably the best out-of-nowhere surprise of the festival. They were true Spaghetti Western players (even more than Spindrift), with the whistling, trumpet, percussion tricks, and the whole vibe. Really good sounding, with a ton of people on the (small) stage - including guest stars.

Then there were the surprise covers. Meat Puppets were one of only a couple of bands to take it into full space-out territory, out of which they shocked me with a Beach Boys cover. Apparently, it's something they do, but I hadn't been keeping up with recent Puppets bootlegs, I guess. Entrance Band also got all abstract some, and then covered Love's "A House Is Not A Motel." In addition to their award-winning (at least on this blog) psych-folk indie-pop, Woods also went deep-space like 3 times, which was certainly beyond the call of duty.

That video was shot from right in front of me, and that's how the whole fest ended. BJTM played an epic show, including several extended rants from Anton. Afterwards, while trying to find a taxi, I saw the "Spokesman for the Revolution" heading towards me on the Riverside sidewalk. I told him good show, then turned to see Anton being shoved into the cab we just missed, surrounded by various shouts from adoring fans.
