Jelatinous Xube PsychmyX ~
Astral Headspace, Vol. 10

Sorry for being so lazy recently. I've been working on a theme for the next blog comp - first it was best of 2012, then Indonesian post-rock, then role-playing soundtracks... but in the end, this new one could only be for the next Austin Psych Fest.

Following the original partial line-up announcement, they've now put out the full schedule - yeah! Newly added?

Moving Sidewalks (Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top) ~ Os Mutantes ~
Roky Erickson ~ The Raveonettes ~ OM ~ Silver Apples ~
Kaleidoscope (UK) ~ Tamaryn ~ Suuns ~ Besnard Lakes ~
Indian Jewelry ~ Bass Drum of Death ~ Night Beats ~
No Joy ~ Young Magic ~ Wall of Death ~ Holy Wave ~
Ride into the Sun ~ Hearts in Space

YEAH!!

This ended up as an interesting collection. Previous comps have featured a lot of this year's artists - which you can explore via the brand-new index, or the links in the "Astral Headspace Comps" section to the right. So we have a lot of newcomers & deep cuts. Plus a Flammarion woodcut cover concept!

Jelatinous Xube PsychmyX ~ Vol. 10
[current download link]
... which will eventually appear only at the Comp Index.

1. "Rad Times" - Black Bananas
New project from Jennifer of Royal Trux! MP3 from Pitchfork.

2. "Tiny Spiders" - The Soft Moon
Psych Fest semi-regulars return for another round in Austin. MP3 straight outta Stereogum. The Soft Moon also appeared on blog-comp-series Vol. 5.

3. "See Forever (revisited)" - Indian Jewelry
Houston's own(ly) Psych Fest troopers, this MP3 off from band's Soundcloud... Indian Jewelry also also appeared on blog-comp-series Vol. 5, and also also also Vol. 6 and Vol. 8. The latest album Peel It (#16, 2012) available from the Psych Fest label: Reveberation Appreciation Society.

4. "Oscillations (1968)" [edit] - Silver Apples
Really old-school, the various Silver Apples snippets here come from the official website. Silver Apples appeared on blog-comp Vol. 5, live with Grails!

5. "It Will Never Be" - White Fence
Been hearing a lot about this dude - sounds prolific. MP3 was from Pitchfork.

6. "Puppet on a String" - Night Beats
Seattle Texas-garage rockers, MP3 from PressWolf Soundcloud. You can also get their record via Psych Fest label.

7. "Sea Lion Goth Blues" - The Growlers
Growlers!!! I forget, probably from PureHoney Soundcloud.

8. "Corvalis" - DIIV
Dive, diV,D11v? MP3 from Pitchfork - also had one o' theirs on the previous comp.

9. "I Am Blind" - Elephant Stone
Someone told me this dude plays sitar for The Black Angels - and I heard he's from Canadia. Sounds good. MP3 de The Decibel Tolls. Okay, new album on R.A.S. label too.

10. "Streams of Sorrow" [edit]- Silver Apples with Sonic Boom
Or Spectrum, or that guy from Spacemen 3... (also playing Psych Fest!) From their collaboration EP A Lake of Teardrops (1998).

11. "Good Clues" - Gary War
Don't know much, except that he covers APP for a totem. Also from New Raytheonport (2008), whole album on the Internet Archive.

12. "Golden Truth" - Holy Wave
Another one with a new release on the Psych Fest label. I think they've been added to the expanding Maserati/Soft Moon tour, coming to Houston in... March, I think? Snagged the MP3 from ReverbNation. March 12th at Fitzgerald's!

13. "Burning Mirrors" - Lumerians
Lumerians are veterans of an earlier Psych Fest event, and also appeared on blog-comp-series Vol. 6. This MP3 track comes from Prefix Mag.

14. "Now (revisited)" - The Holydrug Couple
I thought I'd put the Holydruggers on a comp before, but looks like it was just a Chilean-themed Facebook collection post. MP3 from the band Soundcloud - could have also gone with one of the free versions of "Ancient Land" available from their Bandcamp.

15. "Special A" - Ttotals
Just did a Google. Looks like the keywords are "Nashville" and "duo." Would you like to know more? (That was a Starship Troopers film reference!) Got this tune from band's Soundcloud.

16. "Lovefingers" [edit] - Silver Apples
Another sample from the 1968 s/t album!

17. "100" - Vinyl Williams
HA! This guy's stage name made me think he was like a hip-hop DJ or something. Not even... apparently it's a play on his true given name. MP3 from the vinyl soundcloud (which should totally be a thing).

18. "Spoon" - Boris
Boris are from Japan, this MP3 is from Pitchfork. They appeared on comps Vol. 1 & Vol. 2. First two! Also my #6 Album of 2007.

19. "She Owns the Streets" - The Raveonettes
I was going to guess France, but no! Denmark... since 2001? Huh. MP3 from Filter Magazine. "Copenhagen" is a fun word to say, just roll it around in your mouth.

20. "All Tangled Up" - Woodsman
Hey, full circular. I discovered Woodsman while prepping for Austin Psych Fest 2011 (#4 Live, 2011), and then they ended up as my #2 Albums of 2011. And due to their free-music generosity, they wound up on blog-comp-series Vol. 5, Vol. 6, Vol. 7, Vol. 8, and Vol. 9. And now, thanks to Stereogum, Volume 10.

21. "Dia 36" (Os Mutantes cover) - The Trip
Since Os Mutantes (#15, 1969) pre-date free MP3 downloads, I found this Brazilian group/duo covering their fellow Brasileiros from their Soundcloud.

22. "Aldhechen Manin" - Tinariwen
Last year's Psych Fest (#1 Live, 2012) featured Bombino, a quite-jammin' Tuareg band. Well, Tinariwen were the originators! MP3 downloaded from band's Soundcloud.

23. "Cremation Ghat II" - OM
Let's see... Om were the rhythm section of the legendary Sleep, and stuck it out when that band split. Later the drummer bailed, and was replaced by Emil Amos (of Grails, Holy Sons). I believe they're still just a duo now. Another from Stereogum MP3.

24. "Anthem" [edit] - Silver Apples with Jimi
From their collaboration back in the late-'60s! I wonder if The Simeon enjoys watching Super Troopers (2001)...

Index of Astral MP3 Compilation Series

Because of the various issues with online storage (legitimate & otherwise), and the growing number of links to be monitored and updated - I'm setting up this free-standing post as a download & cross-reference index. Somewhat like the earlier Top 10 index and home-brew video index.

In addition to this post, I'll try to keep all the links updated in the "COMPS" section to the right. At this point the format for each comp is: Title linking to the Rapidshare download, and [vol. #] linking to the original post with tracklist & other info.

A couple of other quick notes: These collections all come from either totally legit promotional MP3's offered on the interet for download (see original posts for sources), or with the artists' permission. Also, Rapidshare will delete any files that go 30 days without download activity. If you experience any issues, post over on Facebook, since I usually overlook comments here on the blog itself for too long.

Astralnauts Are Go!!
Here's the Astral MP3 Compilation download series... so far.

2009~ Astralnauts Are Go!! vol. 1 [Download / Post]
Hey, the bitrates here aren't quite as bad as I'd remembered (just a lot of 128-192). Pretty solid first effort, with several ongoing favorite acts: BTWS, LP4, Boris, Earthless... And probably my favorite cover art. [15 tracks / 2+ hours]

Beyond the Astral Waves... vol. 2 [Download / Post]
Similar line-up as before... with some additional live stuff (Woods & Sebadoh), Psych Fest drone-rock (Black Angels, BJTM, The Asteroid No. 4), and good electronix (Caribou, Fujiya & Miyagi). [19 tracks / ~1¾ hours]

Decem per Decem
2010~ Cleansing the Headspace: vol. 3 [Download / Post]
Quick review of the tracklist would indicate fairly heavy going. This starts out with Isis, Baroness & Nadja (MBV cover), then towards the end there's Krallice, WITTR, Mastodon & Nadja (a-Ha cover). Other stuff too, with expanded weirdo excerpts. [21 tracks / ~2 hours]

Decem per Decem ~ vol. 4 [Download / Post]
If forced to pick only one of these, this just might be the one. Goes all over the place, but manages to include many blog favorites (sometimes multiply), and it keeps moving along (only one true epic). [27 tracks / ~2¼ hours]

2011~ Early through Everything... vol. 5 [Download / Post]
I hate to sound self-impressed, but I'm pretty impressed with myself. Looking back at these, I got more quality and/or interesting stuff than I thought. Anyway, #5 is about as electronical as #3 was heavy. [28 tracks / ~2½ hours]

Foreverything II / vol. 6 [Download / Post]
Coming just two weeks after Early, this was kind of a direct sequel. I might have been pushing it, drunk on the flood of free MP3's. My cyberweb detective skills were probably peaking right around the same time bands' freeshare policies were. [30 tracks / 2½+ hours]

Gongs to the Tempel
2012~ Gongs to the Tempel - vol. 7 [Download / Post]
The secret to releasing 3 blog comps in 1 year is to start early! You know this one's great because "I tried to build this one mainly around the 2011 Year End lists." What could be better?? [38 tracks / 3 hours!]

Hubble Telescope Discovers Sphinx on Pluto's Moon (vol. 8) [Download / Post]
... and following up in February. I think that "also a bunch of random other stuff" might describe this better than "Split amongst the upcoming and previous Austin Psych Fests." But maybe if you squint. Some really good music nevertheless. [46 tracks / ~3¾ hours!!]

In vveirdo veritas: vol. 9 [Download / Post]
This starts off looking like a Best of 2012, veers into a ditch of weirdness, then cruises some pop landscape, before returning home in time for the holidays. Even reined it in to [20 tracks / 1½+ hours].

2013~ Jelatinous Xube PsychmyX ~ vol. 10 [Download / Post]
What can I say? It's a bunch of people playing this year's Austin Psych Fest, so it's gotta be outta sight, right? 'Tis... [24 tracks / 2¼+ hours]

In vveirdo veritas: Astral Headspace, Vol. 9

Updated links are being maintained at the Comp Index post and in the COMPS section to the right - links below now only lead back to the original posts / tracklists.

Back by popular demand!! (Well, one person asked about it over on Facebook...) The 9th installment of our MP3 blog-comp series. And also the re-upload of everything previous that I could get around to! RapidShare will delete the ones with no activity for a month, so get them while they exist.

Astralnauts Are Go!! vol. 1 [post]
Beyond the Astral Waves... vol. 2 [post]
Cleansing the Headspace: vol. 3 [post]
Decem per Decem ~ vol. 4 [post]
Early through Everything... vol. 5 [post]
Foreverything II / vol. 6 [post]
Gongs to the Tempel - vol. 7 [post]
Hubble Telescope Discovers Sphinx... Vol. 8 [post]

And your newest favorite collection - streamlined from the usual sprawl, but still covering a lotta ground:

In vveirdo veritas: Astral Headspace, Vol. 9

1. "Crom" - The Linus Pauling Quartet (2012)
Going to see these dudes just this afternoon! Got this .mp3 from ye olde Soda Shop.

They also have a great new official video for the great tune "Victory Gin." The LP4 have appeared as: #3 of 2007, #2 of 2003, #9 of 1995, and #14 of 2010.

2. "Waswasa" - Six Organs of Admittance (2012)

I've been digging this album a lot recently. Downloaded from the link at the song title, courtesy of Self-Titled Mag.

Six Organs of Admittance released 2 albums for the #10 of 2009.

3. "Supernal Radionics" - Woodsman (2008)

One of my recent favorite psychedelic jam bands (#2, 2011) - got it from off The Fader

4. "A Swan is Born" - Can (1972/2012)

Very excited to host one of my all-time faves, the kings of Krautrock. One of several .mp3's courtesy of Pitchfork.

Can is already #4 of 1972, #1 of 1973, and #2 of 1974... and we're just getting started! This song is a Lost Tapes prototype for "Sing Swan Song" off Ege Bamyasi (1972).

5. "The Eliminator" - Maserati (2012)
Also from Pitchfork - hear the studio version... Maserati has placed as #2 of 2007, co-#2 of 2009, and #1 of 2010.

Live bootleg of that whole show was linked by band. So call it official!

6. "Sleepwalker" - Moon Duo (2012)
Saw these two at this year's Austin Psych Fest & just a few weeks ago - groovy! Pitchfork MP3.

7. "Psychedelic #9" - Deep Space (2012)

Newish psych-jams from Austin, from Bandcamp at link or check their Soundcloud for more.

8. "Tyken's Rift" - Steve Moore (2012)

Half of Zombi, this one's super-new. Mp3 came off the reliable SteveMoore2600 Soundcloud. Couple more there since this one - keep up!

Alone or with A.E., Moore has been #1 of 2004, #1 of 2006, co-#2 of 2009, #23 of 2010, and #5 of 2011.

9. "The Golden Waste" - Trouble Books & Mark McGuire (2011)

Dreampop-like duo plus 1/3 of Emeralds (#2 of 2010), courtesy of the late Altered Zones, semi-resurrected as AdHoc.fm...

10. "Brute Neighbors" - Moholy-Nagy (2011)

I don't remember too much about these guys, but if Temporary Residence Ltd. vouches for them...

11. "Giger's Locomotive" - High Pink Clouds (2011)
Discovered via this year's SpaceRockCon in Alabama, downloaded from High Pink Clouds' official site.

12. "Demona" [Dead Moon cover] - Grouper (2012)

I've usually liked what I've heard from Grouper, but never end up buying her albums. I think I should, though. Downloaded from Stereogum.

13. "The Story Is Lost" - The Caretaker (2011)

I am definitely glad to have The Caretaker back (he's always been the caretaker). These came from Altered Zones, an unreleased track from An empty bliss beyond this World (#10, 2011).

The Caretaker is famous for being the #1 Drone/Ambient of 2005 and #3 of same, 2009.

14. "One White Candle, No Moon Night" - Starving Weirdos (2009)

That's right: Starving Weirdos. Downloaded from their home website...

15. "How Long Have You Known" - Diiv (2012)
These guys have been getting a lot of love on their album Oshin. O, they're from Brooklyn - got it. À la Pitchfork!

16. "Only in My Dreams" - Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti (2012)
West Coast represent! More Pitchfork.

17. "Sparks Fly Again" - Beachwood Sparks (2012)

Old(ish) school! I thought BWS went back further than '97, but that's what Wiki tells me. Mp3 from same place as that link: the Sub-Pop SoundCloud. Check it out!

18. "Mary Lou" - Black Mountain (2012)

Last one from Pitchfork? This is from their Year Zero surf-movie OST.

Black Mountain was #10 of 2008, and later #17 of 2010. And before that, individual members joined up as co-#8 of 2006.

19. "d|p 1.3" - William Basinski (2003)
From the upcoming Disintegration Loops vinyl mega-box-set on TRL. I am salivating in anticipation...

20. "Christmas Time Is Here" [Vince Guarladi cover]

Nope. This is available from a lot of places, but I believe it was also discovered over at Pitchfork. Brooklyn!

Woods has been on quite a run here recently - #6 of 2010, then #7 of 2011, with a pretty good one out this year too.

A Monument to Love & Truth

This is a bit about Bill Hicks.

Remember Me?
Long story short, Hicks was a new kind of comedian in the '80s, busting out of Houston, TX, on a rant. Scathing, influential, and dead much too soon...

"Flying Saucer Tour" from Dangerous (1990)

That was the first bit that I ever heard from him - on Rice University's late, lamented radio station KTRU.

"Great Times on Drugs" from Relentless (1992)

So yeah, they want to build a Bill Hicks statue. Good on 'em! Mightn't you help out?

I got this e-mail from Free Press Houston, which puts on our local Summerfest (#5 Live Show of 2011, #8 of 2010):
BILL HICKS is revered throughout the world as many things - legend, truthsayer, shaman, philosopher, and many more. Bill was a rare breed of human; A guy that comes along once in a lifetime to challenge us to be better. He made you think, he kept you on the edge of your seat, and he was completely fearless. He's one of the few comedians that is still relevant almost 20 years after being taken from the world too soon, and his legacy grows every day. Yet, there does not stand a single monument in the world to him. Bill began his comedy career in Houston at the now defunct Comedy Workshop on San Felipe and Shepherd. A statue to permanently pay homage to him in the city where he began his journey would solidify his legacy. This statue would serve as a symbol to remember the past and everything Bill gave us, but also as a reminder for the future generations to seek knowledge around every corner.

Houston sculptor DAVID ADICKES has agreed to build the statue of Bill. If you've ever seen his work, you know he is the best man for the job and that the statue will be nothing short of amazing. A Houston legend sculpting a Houston legend - It doesn't get better than that. The family and estate of Bill Hicks has given their blessing to this project and will be on hand at the statue's unveiling.

THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN. You can directly support the building and placement of the statue to honor a hometown hero by clicking the PayPal link below and donating money to the cause.

The costs for creating, placing, and maintaining such a monument are staggering. Costs also include a nationwide PR campaign and location fees. We estimate this total to be about $70,000 yet any funds which exceed cost will be donated to Bill Hicks Foundation for Wildlife.

Free Press Houston is going to start this project off with an initial donation of $10,000. BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP.

For the most generous donors ($5,000 or more), we have something special for you-- YOUR NAME WILL BE PERMANENTLY INSCRIBED on the statue thanking you for making it a reality.

For donations of $1000 or more, YOU WILL BE HONORED AT A PRIVATE THANK YOU DINNER AND PARTY the evening preceding unveiling. This party will have very special guest performers.

People who donate $200 or more will receive hand signed and numbered, LIMITED-EDITION SILK SCREENED ART PRINTS OF THE 'REMEMBER ME?' POSTER BY WORLD RENOWNED POSTER ARTIST JERMAINE ROGERS.

But really, anything helps, and if you aren't able to donate money, a simple share on your social networks spreads the word about this project to more people and helps immensely. Please pass this along to everyone you know and encourage them to support in any way they can.

We have our own ideas about where this statue should be placed - a public historical place where fans can pay homage, but also where people who Bill is unknown to can discover him for the first time. Because you're the ones who are going to make this dream a reality in the end, we'd like to have your opinions on where this statue should go as well. Please email us your thoughts on where you'd like to see this statue at, and any other suggestions here.

You can DONATE via PayPal

"Sex on Trial" from Relentless (1992)

... for the record.

Gongs to the Tempel -
Astral Headspace, Vol. 7

Current, updated download links have been moved to a central Comp Index post, as well as the COMPS section over on the right side of the blog.

All the way to #7! If you've missed any, all our promotional .mp3 compilations can be found on the menu at right, under "Astral Headspace Comps." Maybe worth a look?

I tried to build this one mainly around the 2011 Year End lists (albums + live), with some other notables that may or may not fit it. You make the call!

Gongs to the Tempel
A few quick notes, then we'll get into it real basic. You can hear the music by downloading...

Looking at the sources for various tunes, I think it's clear that Altered Zones will be missed. The site was truly a standby for this blog for AZ's entire, brief existence. They still have .mp3's available for now...

I was totally happy to find the Self-Titled Mag SoundCloud archives - whatta bonanza!

And finally, major thanks this time to NYC Taper for filling in the promo .mp3 gaps - and really for everything. Extra-great website for legit live recordings! You should be visiting there religiously.

So, here it is:

Foreverything II /
Astral Headspace, Vol. 6

FYI - All download links have been corraled into a Comp Index post, or in the COMPS section to the right.

And here is your Volume 6, or maybe Number five, pt. 2? I had/have so many promo mp3's recently that I'm crankin' these out like quickly.

We also still have infinite free downloads of: Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3, and Vol. 4.

Foreverything II / Astral Headspace, Vol. 6 (click to download) brings you more 30 tracks of that patented musical exploration. Once more at 2½ hours, it covers a lot of ground - with a bit more Metals than the previous installation.

Song titles, where linked, will take you to someplace you can check it out right now.

Foreverything II / Astral Headspace, Vol. 6 (2011)

1. "Shrunken Heads" - Zombi (co-#2, 2009)
- Through closer, extended listening, I am warming up more and more to the new Zombi album, Escape Velocity. Available now from Relapse Records, with the preview track from Stereogum.

2. "Eos, The Dawn" - Jonas Reinhardt
- Still on my to-do list, new record with awesome title Music for the Tactile Dome (2011). Mp3 from Altered Zones.

3. "Disco Party in the Castle of Love (Tonight)" - Emperor Penguin (#4, 2005) [live]
- Just found a stash of a few Emperor Penguin mp3's available at Epitonic. Comedic synth/guitar duo, about which more info both before and later too.

4. "Dolemite" - Original Soundtrack Theme
- Rudy Ray Moore was just the best! This mp3, weirdly enough, from Relapse Records.

5. "Mazes" - Moon Duo
- I ran across this one at Altered Zones. I have no idea, but sounds pretty cool.

6. "Saturday" - Oneida
- Kinda shocked there's no video or anything for this song, except the .mp3 courtesy of the very generous and excellent Jagjaguwar Records. I had an Oneida post brewing even before the new album dropped. Soon...

7. "Atlanta Brook" - Lumerians
- I think the first band we saw at Austin Psych Fest. This is another file from Altered Zones (AZ). Here's a separate song from a different site...

8. "Sons of Stone" - The People's Temple
- Similar to Moon Duo, I've never even heard of these people (or their temple). From Pitchfork's Playlist, and it sounds like hippies.

9. "Oars" - My Education [live]
- I had heard quite a bit about My Education, but never followed up. They were really, really great opening for Maserati here. The mp3 comes through the band via their Official.fm page.

10. "Abyssal Odyssey" [edit] - Brainworlds
- And the solo guitar/drone project of Maserati's newest touring guitarist, available at CoCoArt label.

11. "Up All Night" - Grails (#19, 2010)
- You probably know how I dig Grails. This is a mellower, new-style tune from last year's new Black Tar Prophecies EP. Several Grails mp3's are (still) floating around at Brooklyn Vegan.

12. "Shadowland" - Barn Owl (#11, 2010)
- New Barn Owl! To-do!! The mp3 was from Stereogum. Album's on Thrill Jockey.

13. "The Epidural" - Gnod (co-#5, 2010)
- It's from Abstehen Der Ohren & Live Birth (2007), one of a few early-days albums offered up free at their Tumbler. I think I have another Gnod post in me, with a new album en route from the U.K.

14. "Beatnik Life" - Thru Black Holes Band
- It's from The Oracle of Space & Time (1992), one of many distributed freely by Aural Innovations. I continue to enjoy these albums whenever I grab a new one - still in 1992 now.

15. "Prophecy of the White Camel / Namoutarre" - Master Musicians of Bukkake (#37, 2010)
- I was going to also include a Sublime Frequencies track for comparison, but didn't find any worth doing. This is not the real thing. Downloaded from A.Z. of course.

16. "13th Floor" [excerpt] - Mondo Generator
- The QOTSA song "Tension Head" released by the singer's main band, at the time played by 3 Kyuss alumni (Oliveri-Homme-Bjork). Extended snippet from Southern Lord mp3 page.

17. "White Wings" - Minsk (co-#12, 2010)
- Getting into the metal. I think Minsk considers themselves psychedelic metal. This one is definitely from Relapse Records.

18. "The Clearing" - Krallice (#13, Metal Next Ten 2009)
- Got this from Brooklyn Vegan, because Krallice are the hipster-approved & reviewed urban melodic technical progressive Black Metal band...

19. "In Stable" - Ludicra
- This is what I think of when I hear the term "Black & Roll," not sure if that is accurate though. This mp3 came from Stereogum.

20. "Devilution" - High on Fire [live]
- Saw these guys a year or so back, and their raw heaviness reminds me of the mighty Motörhead. Another label sample from Relapse Records!

21. "Stack Collision with Heap" - ST 37
- ST 37 is related to My Education via one overlapping member. I've gone up and down with this band, but I've been on an upswing for awhile now. Downloaded from the Emperor Jones archives. Here's another song from that same album.

22. "WTT" - The Diamond Center [live]
- Unfortunately missed them both with White Hills and at Austin Psych Fest - bad timing on my part. I did get this CD, and it's real cool. Mp3 from band's website.

23. "Serfer" - Woodsman
- Lots of Woodsman mp3's grabbed from this Altered Zones band profile, in preparation for Austin Psych Fest - where they jammed it up!

24. "Swans" - Indian Jewelry
- Houston. Represent!! Enigmatic but out-there band of the '00s. Check 'em out through the We Are Free label.

25. "Yellow Echoesz" - Cloudland Canyon (#30, 2010)
- One of the better tracks from from last year's Fin Eaves, nabbed from this Altered Zones band profile. Too bad to be disappointed at Psych Fest live performance, but it was truly a mess...

26. "White Light" - Arp
- Solo gig from a member of The Alps (#4, 2010). Mp3's available from Brooklyn Vegan.

27. "Zones without People" - Oneohtrix Point Never (#39, 2010)
- This one was from The Village Voice, as far as I can tell. Don't have the complete evidence chain-of-custody documentation. Early last year, I went through OPN's trilogy collection, in case you missed that.

28. "Challenger Deep" - Zombi (#1, 2006)
- Last one today from Relapse promos. Here's a massive video for another track off Surface to Air (2006).

29. "RW" [excerpt] - The Psychic Paramount
- I'm leaning towards getting this one, the CD is at Sound Exchange. Mp3 promotion is doing its job!! File's from Brooklyn Vegan.

30. "Vilna" - Weidorje [full song]
- Some actual Zeuhl from actual Europe from the actual '70s!! Last one today, from Altered Zones - a guest post from neo-Zeuhlers Ga'an.

Prog Archives gives their Zeuhl definition, with examples:
Zeuhl is an adjective in Kobaïan, the language written by Christian Vander, drummer and founder of the French band Magma.

Pronunciation: zEU(h)l, while the EU are like a French E with a slight U, and the (h) is a semi-silent letter which is an integrated part of the EU, totaling in a "syllable and a half".

The word means celestial, although many times it is misunderstood as meaning "celestial music", since the members of Magma describe the genre of their music as Zeuhl. Zeuhl Wortz, though, means Music of the universal might.

The genre is a mixture of musical genres like Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Modernism and Fusion. Common elements: oppressive or discipline-conveying feel, marching themes, throbbing bass, an ethereal piano or Rhodes piano, and brass instruments.

Here is my inexpert opinion!

Early through Everything...
Astral Headspace, Vol. 5

Management is now maintaining download links at this Comp Index, and in the COMPS section to the right of the blog.

Number five. We've reached critical mass with free internet promo mp3's floating around, to the point that I might run off 2 or 3 of these free comps really quick. My first draft for this one was four-plus hours long, and I didn't just keep the 'best' stuff. Volume 6 is underway...

Don't forget to check out Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3, and/or especially last year's round-up Vol. 4.

Early through Everything
[Cover image from open-source Flickr project Glitchbot]

Early through Everything... Astral Headspace, Vol. 5 (click to download) consists of 28 tunes from every corner of the spherical, infinite musical universe. Everyone knows the best music comes from the corners of infinite spheres! Around 2½ hours, there's too much to inventory it all. We've got some psychedelia (both electronic and guitar-based), mid-'60s avant-weirdness, goth-pop, neo-Zeuhl, Kraut-drone, hauntological prog-folk, black ambient from New Mexico, a live jam between Grails and Silver Apples, uhh... that kind of thing.

Song titles, where linked, will take you to someplace you can listen - videos (some are pretty rad), streaming, or whatever. Hopefully you've got the Megaupload thing down, but if not.

Early through Everything... Astral Headspace, Vol. 5 (2011)

1. "Almost Grew My Hair" - Grails (#19, 2010) [live]
- O man, Grails... Excellent new album from Temporary Residence, and I think I got the mp3 from Stereogum.

2. "Tone Cloak" - Woodsman
- These guys were great at the Austin Psych Fest! Mp3 from Altered Zones. Woodsman's side of a tour split-cassette with Tjutjuna - here's the other side. New album available from Lefse Records.

3. "Journey to the Starglow Restaurant" [edit] - Space Debris (#7, 2008)
- Active Krautrock jamband from actual Germany. Several mp3's available at the band's website. The two 2011 archive releases are now on-sale domestically (U.S.) at All That Is Heavy. It's a toss-up whether it's cheaper to just import yourself from Euro-zone.

4. "Tiny Circle" - Wolf People
- I keep circling around this band, including songs on comps, seeing if they'll stick. Maybe this is it now! This song popped up on a bunch of other people's podcast mixes, and I didn't want to be left out. Albums and .mp3's available from Jagjaguwar.

5. "The Condition of Nothing" - White Hills (#5, 2010) [live]
- I need to continue my 2010 Top 10 posts. Caught White Hills in Houston and then at the Austin Psych Fest. Loud and fun, just like this tune. Mp3 and soon the new album H-p1 available at Thrill Jockey.

6. "Smokey Jotus" - Jonas Reinhardt
- Really dig Jonas Reinhardt. Can't believe I missed the album last year. New one's out on Not Not Fun Records, with this mp3 courtesy of Altered Zones.

7. "Zero-Point Field" - Steve Moore (#23, 2010)
- The more synthesizer half of Zombi, this is another file from Altered Zones (AZ). As I mess around with some synth simulator apps, I'm learning the importance of sound design. The 12" single looks available at Rush Hour.

8. "Molecular Cloud (Starbirth)" - Plaens
- One of many like this from MABA Tapes' SoundCloud. I couldn't exactly figure it out, but you might be able to find Distro via their blog...

9. "Illegal Entry with Intent to Zuul" - Umberto (#34, 2010) [live show]
- From the Freeze! 7", where he takes a detour into '80 Action soundz with a Beverly Hills Cops + Ghostbusters theme. Mp3 again from Altered Zones (AZ), and EP again from Not Not Fun (NNF). Here's a YouTube for another track from this one.

10. "Low Ride on Moon Blvd" - White Rainbow (#2 Drone, 2009)
- One of the more tripped-out tunes on the last funked-up mixtape available at White Rainbow Pizza BandCamp... worth exploring.

11. "Druid's Leafy Nest" - Tony Conrad & Angus MacLise [see at end]
- Speaking of maximalism, here's an extended jam from two major names of the '60s. Especially regarding the Velvet Underground history. Altered Zones has recently started sharing music from the past more often.

12. "Caged in Stammheim" - Demdike Stare (#8, 2010)
- I'm a huge, huge fan. Mp3 from A.Z., of course. This tune kicks off Liberation through Healing (2010), stream it on SoundCloud - along with many other Modern Love sets.

13. "A Year and a Day" - Belbury Poly (co-#9, 2010)
- From the last full length, From an Ancient Star (2009), another cool one from Belbury. Mp3 from Altered Zones, album(s) from Ghost Box.

14. "Silk Rd" (live 11/22/2008) - Grails, with Silver Apples [studio]
- Such an important song in Grails history, performed with Simeon from Silver Apples - Nov. 22, 2008. Several Grails mp3's are floating around at Brooklyn Vegan.

15. "For Isabel" - The Alps (#4, 2010)
- From new LP Easy Action from Mexican Summer, with mp3 by Altered Zones (AZ).

16. "Temporary Famine Ship" - Indian Jewelry [live]
- Very cool experimental super-group from here in Houston. This one is from Free Gold! (2008), mp3 and record on We Are Free.

17. "Breathe the Fire" - The Soft Moon
- Gonna dip our collective toe into some more retro-popular styles. While checking out bands for Austin Psych Fest, I got samples from this A.Z. band blurb. Driving post-punk that woulda played well at Numbers.

18. "Mr Peterson" - Perfume Genius
- Got this from Pitchfork, who was in love with this song and artist. Good tune. The vocals, piano and general vibe, remind me quite a bit of Neil Young - specifically "After the Gold Rush."

19. "Just Enough" - Julian Lynch
- Another one that I keep digging what I hear, and keep compiling, but never make the leap. Lynch has a pretty unique aesthetic - kinda smeared and garbled, but melodic. Kinda noisy, without all the irritation. Also from Pitchfork.

20. "Night" - Zola Jesus [live]
- Dark and Souixsiesque, real good voice. The '80s just keep coming back, with varying quality of influences and results. Mp3 from Altered Zones' 2010 Albums mega-post, which I recommend checking out.

21. "Pelham Island Road" - Oneohtrix Point Never (#39, 2010)
- I wanted to like this album more, but this was one of my more favorite tracks on it. And I think I'll keep giving OPN a chance, since I usually like over half his albums quite a lot. Downloaded from this AZ cross-post of this Village Voice interview.

22. "Island Best" - Stellar OM Source
- In the same vein, but OM is a one-woman electro-drone artist! Downloaded from this AZ cross-post of this Foxy Digitalis interview. It also has the word 'island' in the title.

23. "Enter the Host II" [edit] - William Fowler Collins (#8 Drone, 2009)
- Mp3 came from from Root Strata, not sure if they have the casette anymore (ed. of 100). But they give you digital options from that link. I went with Boomkat for price point, FLAC availability, and brand loyalty.

24. "V" - Soothsayer (vid for "IX")
- Another cassette!! I know absolutely nothing about this except what's on the Altered Zones post.

25. "Wizard Tree" - Mothers of Gut
- Same here... Well, except that the comments point to streaming at BandCamp (the other album: $1). Also, that Mothers of Gut is a terrible name.

26. "The Crash Palace of Records" - MV+EE (#8 Live Show, 2009)
- High-grade American guitar music, as usual. Mp3 from Altered Zones, and album from Three Lobed Recordings.

27. "DDB" - The Psychic Paramount [live]
- All I knew was that these guys had played out with Zombi and more recently Maserati & Steve Moore. Their music ended up being looser and louder than I'd expected. Yet another one from from A.Z., with link to the No Quarter record label.

28. "Servant Eye" - Ga'an
- not Zuul, but Zeuhl! Just try to guess where this came from... On the label that shall not be named.

HBSP-2X (a record label) is not buying homes in Beverly Hills.

"Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart" A CAPTCHA (IPA: /ˈkæptʃə/) is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to ensure that the response is not generated by a computer. The process involves one computer (a server) asking a user to complete a simple test which the computer is able to generate and grade. Because other computers are unable to solve the CAPTCHA, any user entering a correct solution is presumed to be human. A common type of CAPTCHA requires that the user type the letters or digits of a distorted image that appears on the screen. The term "CAPTCHA" was coined in 2000 by Luis von Ahn, Manuel Blum, Nicholas J. Hopper (all of Carnegie Mellon University), and John Langford (then of IBM). It is a contrived acronym for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart", trademarked by Carnegie Mellon University. A CAPTCHA is sometimes described as a reverse Turing test, because it is administered by a machine and targeted to a human, in contrast to the standard Turing test that is typically administered by a human and targeted to a machine.
